Paul Csige: Tools and the Talent

Professional Equipment for Music and Sound
The Other Gear-heads : by Paul Y. Csige

My personal setup is comparable to many small sound studios. The gear I assembled augments my talent and enables me to compose, edit, orchestrate, arrange, and record music for all forms of media. This state-of-the-art system consists of hardware and software components manufactured by today's cutting edge technology leaders in the Computer and Audio/Video Industries.

I chose this particular setup but because of its portability and its power. For monitors I use the V6 KRKs. I mostly mix orchestral music and for the price these speakers satisfy my needs. For a MIDI controller I use a M-Audio 88 es. It has the full range of a piano but is only 15 pounds. I compose with sample libraries so I don't need an intense synthesizer.

My favorite editing tools for sound effects are Pro Tools, Logic and Digital Performer. Other software programs I use include Reason, DVD Studio Pro, Final Cut Pro, Avid, and Photoshop.

The programs I use the most are Logic, Pro Tools and DP4. I prefer Logic as a sequencer because of the EX24 which is a very powerful sampler and Logic has amazing audio mixing and DSP capabilities. I use Pro Tools for sound effects and recording and for MIDI scores music from DP4. I use the WAVES Diamond Bundle for plug-ins and almost any type of DSP is possible.

Having Pro Tools means I must use the DIGI 002. I route my MIDI and my speakers from it. I use an XLR patch bay for imputing mic signals into the DIGI rather than reaching around the back. The microphones I use the most are a pair of AKG C1000. I also use an SM 57.

Other equipment I use are the MOTU Mark II 828 and the MIDI Timepiece for video sync and using multiple MIDI devices. I sometimes use the Evolution UC-33 controller for mixing MIDI. I also have a laptop with the same programs. This system can by completely disassembled and put into a car. This setup allows me to compose, write, sequence, mix and print to almost any medium from CDs to DVDs.
