Tools and the Talent

Professional Equipment for Music and Sound
Hardware Part I : by Paul Y. Csige

At the heart of my setup are 4 separate computer systems, headed up by one of the most powerful PC's ever made, the Power Mac G5 with dual 2.0 GHz CPUs. My modifications have separated the operating system and applications onto a separate drive. The main storage area consists of a striped array of 2 SATA (250GB) drives, for a total of half a terabyte of internal storage. Backing all this up is an external FireWire 800 drive array, providing half a terabyte of storage capacity. The other systems function either as back up, or for running specific software applications, as explained below.

My G4 from last year increases my computing power and it also functions as a backup system. With dual processors, I have the ability to work on two systems at the same time. Its configured like my G5, with the same disk cpacity and external FireWire back up system. Its Nvidea Graphics card is configured to drive my second 24" LCD display.

Some applications, such as GigaStudio, require an Intel PC setup. The Shuttle is a small enclosure called an XPC form factor. Pentium 4 runs at 3.0 GHz and the system is modified and tuned specifically to run GigaStudio, with 2 GB of internal memory. For video I use a Radeon 9600 GT with 256MB DDR memory and for audio I use M-Audio's Audiophile 2496 card.

The two Shuttle systems are small and quiet. They are located at the base of my equipment rack. The modifications on these are similar to that of my G5, a separate drive for the OS and applications and striped Sata drives providing the same half a terbvyte of internal storage. With these, I use the internal DVD to back up my work.
